CHRISTCHURCH BIOSOLIDS DRYING ENERGY CENTRE

Energy for Industry was the successful tenderer to design, build and operate the Energy Centre for the Christchurch City Council

Energy for Industry is delighted to be assisting the Christchurch City Council with the management of the City’s municipal biosolids. Energy for Industry successfully tendered for, and has now signed an agreement with the Christchurch City Council to design, build and operate the Energy Centre for the city’s new Biosolids Drying Facility being built at the Bromley waste water treatment plant.

The Energy Centre installation will commence in November 2009 and the heat plant start up will be in June and July 2010. The heat plant will consist of a 4.2MW hot water heating system and two boilers fuelled with wood and biogases gases: Landfill Gas and Digester Gas. These biogases will be the priority fuel supplemented with up to 7,000 tonnes per annum of wood fuels.

By using renewable energy for drying, the Council’s current costs of disposing of the material will be reduced, environmental management will be improved, and the project will open up the option in the future to use the dry bio solids as a biofuel. Energy for Industry will be obtaining local wood fuels from a range of sources including construction/demolition industry, waste wood from local forests, pulp logs or sawmill chips to fuel the plant.

The project gives Energy for Industry the opportunity to gain experience in the emerging municipal biosolids drying sector, a solution coming into favour with New Zealand territorial authorities.

Outside the wood processing industry, Energy for Industry’s new plant will be the largest user of wood energy in Canterbury and it will provide us with the opportunity to play a significant and active role in the fast developing Canterbury regional wood fuel market. This is a timely opportunity as it is one of Energy for Industry target business development areas over the next few years.
